Teenage sexting laws

Texas attorney general and a state senator have filed legislation aimed at preventing sexting. It typically involves teenagers using cell phones to send sexually explicit messages or images to each other. The new proposed law would make teenage sexting a Class C misdemeanor and teens and parents could be sentenced to a sexting education class. But some are questioning how enforceable that bill would be should it make it into the law books. more...

Teen sexting: Technological trend leads to tragic consequences

Sexting using cell phones to send explicitly sexual photos  is a growing teenage trend with potentially devastating results. In an effort to get teens to think before they hit that "send" button, the office of Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper has developed an informational program for local schools and parent groups. High school students at the Frankel Jewish Academy in West Bloomfield Township learned in a recent presentation how one split-second click can have lifelong consequences ranging from public humiliation to felony charges and a place on the sex offender registry. more....

Sexting May Place Teens at Legal Risk

One in five teens may be a child pornographer risking life in prison — for the crime of taking and distributing naked pictures of themselves. This statement, though seemingly ridiculous on many levels, is true. The trouble begins with the dicey mix of teenagers’ age-old sexual curiosity, notoriously bad judgment and modern love of electronic sharing — especially of pictures they take with their digital cameras and cellphones. This mix went seriously sour in upstate New York this winter, when a boy misbehaving at a party took an explicit photo of himself with a cellphone and sent it to a girl in his class — high jinks known as “sexting.” She sent it to friends who sent it to friends until it reached 300 children. more...

Teen ‘sexting’: Youthful prank or sex crime?

Tragic consequences

Walters was joined by Internet safety consultant Parry Aftab, who campaigns against the dangers presented to juveniles by modern communications technology. While Walters talked about how inappropriate it is to treat juveniles the same as adult pedophiles, Aftab talked about the very real dangers that sexting can lead to.
Aftab didn’t argue with Walters’ assertion that the law has not caught up with technology. But, she said, “We don’t really have a choice. There’s nothing else out there, and we are relying on prosecutorial discretion, meaning the prosecutors won’t bring these cases. But when kids are out of hand, prosecutors are saying enough is enough.”
Kids may not think there is any harm in sending revealing pictures to boyfriends and girlfriends, but Aftab brought up the case of Jesse Logan, an 18-year-old high school student from Cincinnati who killed herself after her ex-boyfriend sent nude pictures of her to other girls in her school. Jesse’s mother, Cynthia Logan, and Aftab visited TODAY last week to talk about the tragic case. more...

'Sexting' lands teen on sex offender list

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

When Vanessa Hudgens' naked photos hit the Internet, the "High School Musical" star quickly apologized. But sending nude or seminude pictures, a phenomenon known as sexting, is a fast-growing trend among teens.
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen & Unplanned Pregnancy, a private nonprofit group whose mission is to protect children, and CosmoGirl.com, surveyed nearly 1,300 teens about sex and technology. The result: 1 in 5 teens say they've sexted even though the majority know it could be a crime. more...

Sexting’ bullying cited in teen’s suicide

13-year-old Hope Witsell hanged herself after topless photos circulated
Hope Witsell was just beginning the journey from child to teen. The middle-school student had a tight-knit group of friends, the requisite poster of “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson and big plans to become a landscaper when she grew up.  But one impetuous move robbed Hope of her childhood, and eventually, her life. The 13-year-old Florida girl sent a topless photo of herself to a boy in hope of gaining his attention. Instead, she got the attention of her school, as well as the high school nearby. more...

Generation sexting: What teenage girls really get up to on the internet should chill every parent

Like a real porn star, Becky is heavily made up and lying naked on the bed as the camera flashes. She could be just another glamorous model as she poses provocatively with practised moves. But she isn't. Shockingly, Becky is just 17 and still at school. She's filming herself in a friend's bedroom in a large, detached house in leafy suburbia as her schoolfriends party downstairs. more...

Sexting-related bullying cited in Hillsborough teen's suicide

RUSKIN — At the end of the school year at Beth Shields Middle School, the taunting became so bad that Hope Witsell's friends surrounded her between classes. They escorted her down hallways like human shields, fending off insults such as "whore" and "slut." A few days before, Hope had forwarded a nude photo of herself to a boy she liked — a practice widely known as "sexting." The image found its way to other students, who forwarded it to their friends. Soon the nude photo was circulating through cell phones at Shields Middle and Lennard High School, according to multiple students at both schools. "Tons of people talk about me behind my back and I hate it because they call me a whore!" Hope wrote in her journal. "And I can't be a whore i'm too inexperienced. more...

Teen Sexting Can Lead to Unintended Consequences

Sexting – or the sending and posting of sexually explicit or suggestive messages and photos via digital or electronic devices – is not only against the law in many jurisdictions, it can lead to devastating and long-term unintended consequences for the victims and their families.

“Sex and Tech,” the results of a survey of teens and young adults commissioned by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unwanted Pregnancy and CosmoGirl.com, states that “sending or posting nude or semi-nude photos and videos starts at a young age and becomes even more frequent as teens become young adults.” more....

Sexting Teens

So, what is "sexting"? Well, believe it or not, this is a new rage where teens are sharing sexually risqué messages and/or nude pictures of themselves or others via text or on-line. While many teens openly admit that they know it's wrong to post these sexual photos, they feel the odds of getting caught are so low that they are willing to run the risk.  more...
